我采访问两个人，他们现在是大学三年级的学生。我采访的这些人都学科学课，都是中国国际留学生。对他们来说新冠病毒的影响有很多一样的比如说他们学校的生命。他们二零二零年需要回家的时候都说订飞机票难的不得了。一个学生的妈妈很着急她儿子能不能回家，因为新冠病毒很危险。另外的同学同意是他们回家以后上网上课的时候最大的困难是美国和中国的时间不一样的。两个学生都说他们花晚上的时间上网上课。然后呢，他们都花白天睡觉！一个人说他没上他的教授的办公室时间，因为他早上三点结束上网上课，然后教授的办公室时间早上四点开始吧。他们两个学生的看法和意见很相似，他们说无论需要上网上课，他们也需要调整很多其他的困难。比如说他们的白天安排对他们的父母白天的安排不一样的，晚上更不一样的。到底他们两个学生花一个年没上课，一个休息年。看看现在的情况呢，他们都同意我们学校社会环境越来越好。

I interviewed two people, both are third-year students. Both of the people I interviewed study science and they are both Chinese international students. Looking at Covid’s impacts from both student’s perspectives there are many similarities, for example its effects on their school lives. In 2020 when both students needed to return home, they said buying airplane tickets was extremely difficult. One student’s mother was very worried whether or not her son could return home because Covid is very dangerous. Another one of the student’s similarities is when both students were taking online classes after returning home, the most difficult thing was the difference in time between the U.S. and China. Both students said they spent their nights taking online classes. Then, they would spend the daytime sleeping! One person said they did not attend their professor’s office hours because they finished attending online classes at 3:00am, then their professor’s office hours would start at 4:00 am. Looking at the very similar perspectives and experiences of both students, not only did they have to take online classes, but they also had to adjust to many other difficulties. For example, their eschedule during the day was not the same as their parent’s schedule during the day, at night it differed even more. In the end, both students spent a year not taking classes, a gap year. Looking at now, both students agree that our campus social environment is getting better and better.

        English:I interviewed a senior who is about to graduate this June and is going to graduate school. In March of 2020, when Union closed, he believed it was the right decision to send everyone home and move to online classes because it reduces contact between people. At first, he tried to buy a plane ticket to China but had to live in the CPH dormitory for a while. His flight was not until March 29th, so in that time, he just put on a mask. The ticket price from the Chinese yuan to the US dollar was more than the usual price for a safe and reliable trip. When he returned to China, he went to a hotel to quarantine for 14 days. After that, he returned home and continued online classes. Many of his friends went to study in the UK at that time. He added that the media exaggerated some plane tickets being 200,000 yuan for an economy seat.

 In the Spring, he spoke about issues meeting with the professors and asking them questions. In Spring 2021, a positive difference was not having to adjust to the time difference. Since China is 12 hours ahead of the United States, most of their classes are in the middle of the night. He spoke of many occasions when he would have to wake up at 3 or 4 in the morning to take exams and go to class. During the times he could sleep, professors would hold their office hours. The difficulty of the courses being in the middle of the night with Office Hours only offered at select times encouraged him to work harder as he hoped to return to regular school and life.

Since the U.S. and Chinese governments have different attitudes, he hears that the American people do not pay much attention to masks and Covid by relation. When returning to the U.S., he observed that people might not follow the mask regulations, which worried him. He gave an example explaining if the school did not make it mandatory, people would not wear masks. At that time, he expressed that many of the other students were worried because people wear masks in China while walking in the streets. The attitude gap between both sides is large, but he made it clear that he does not believe this applies to all of America.

Regarding restrictions two years ago, he thought about it a lot. Regions of other countries in the world are not doing well with Covid. Because of this, he will be unable to travel to certain countries as he plans to visit China during the summer vacation. Two years ago, he did not have to think about these issues, but since he still has to, he believes it's beneficial to protect himself from the virus.

When we spoke about relationships between people, he felt it would not change too much because people follow social distancing and still have regular conversations. Since coming back to school in the fall semester, he sees the school almost has returned to normal. He also believes that the relationship between the staff is the same as before. One of the questions asked the students his opinion on if people are closer or farther apart. He expressed that mask-wearing has created an obstacle between people as some people use and don’t use masks. Because of people’s different opinions about mask-wearing and the virus, it may cause a difference in people’s relationships.

我采访问一个人。她叫Athena Bo。他是第四年学生。她在香港出生的，也他的专业是Diplomacy.  我最喜欢采访她因为她非常友好和聪明。

1) In terms of her options, she only had one option which was to go home. She had to book flights, and bring back her things/belongings, especially with the limited time she had. It was not too bad though because when she was on campus, the dining halls were still open so she could get food. Also they were sophomores so they didn’t have to say goodbye to everyone. However, because the seniors were graduating, they were very sad.  

她有两个选择。第一个选择是回家。她需要买飞机票，带回她的东西，这些就让他一 点儿都不高兴。他觉得回家不太有意思，因为他不喜欢买飞机票，特别是定飞机票需要花 时间。但是，他说这次定飞机票容易。香港是大的城市，所以有很多飞机去香港。

第二个选择是留在校内。他的父母不想让他留在学校，因为感觉新冠病毒的病例很 多，他的父母告诉他留在美国很危险。

2) 如果你回家难不难定飞机票？- It was a little bit difficult, because when she went to Hong Kong, she could buy a flight that goes right to Hong Kong. However, it had to be connecting flights because there were no direct flights. So she had to fly from Albany to JFK and then to Hong Kong. but my situation was much better than other Chinese students who live in smaller cities in China. It took them double the time to go home than it took her.

难。还是有一点难，因为他去香港的时候，买一个先去纽约的票去，再到香港去。

但是她的情况比较好因为其他的中国人住在小的城市有很难的经验。

3) 在大学你的父母感觉怎么样？- They felt really good because they knew that Union is a great school, but they were a little worried for my safety.

他们好高兴，因为他们知道这个大学非常优秀，但是他们一点儿担心我的安全。

4) 大学关门的时候你的父母担心不担心？为什么？- They were okay. In January covid cases were very high in Hong Kong. She flew back home because her mom was sick and  she had to go and see her. When she was in Hong Kong, they all had to wear masks. Her parents kept on insisting at the time that going to America would be less  dangerous than staying here in Hong Kong. But then a few months later, America’s cases became extremely high so her parents thought coming back home would be the safest option.

一月份的时候，香港的新冠病毒的病例很多。他的妈妈生病了，所以他留在家看她。在香港 我们能到口罩。他的父母说，美国不危险，所以他能回美国上大学。但是，两个月以后，美国 的病例非常多，所以他回家了。

Part 2 Questions:

1) Pros and Cons of online class - Pros are that she can wake up right before class. Not having to walk to Lippman or Karp was very convenient. She really doesn’t like the winter, so it was great that she didn’t have to walk outside in the cold.  With the free time that she had, she was able to get food and do other things with her friends so those were all good things. But, when she took class online, the constant changes from in person to online classes make it difficult to meet people, which makes me feel a bit lonely.

他们说上网上课有很多好处。第一个好处是她起床以后可以马上上课了。第二个好 处是他不需要出去走到Karp 和Lippman 。他不喜欢冬天，所以他冬天的时候不喜欢去外面 走路上课。但是，他也不喜欢上网上课。他觉得亲子上课变成了上网课让他觉得认识其他 的人难得多。他感觉孤独得多。

2) How did she adjust to the new normal of learning - Because we had online class, as far as masks went, she didn’t have to wear any during this time. But if she had some in person classes they had to wear masks so that was a pretty big adjustment. As an RA, she had to enforce these new rules as well and it took her a while to adjust to these.

因为学生要上网课，他们不用戴上口罩。但是有亲自课的时候，要戴上口罩，所以他觉得调 整很大。他是一个RA, 所以在宿舍强制学生戴口罩的规定让他很难受

4) Was it hard to talk to your professor? Was not difficult. Professors were accommodating as they understood the delay that she had to face.

Part 3 Questions:

1) What about now? Has it eased? - I think Union’s covid protocols have eased quite a lot. 2) Close or far in terms of friendships? I have become closer, and I have met more people. 3) Biggest change from Union closing to now?
