Pearson's Trust Word Usage Over Time

Resource added

Full description

While Pearson seems to be upset with his community in Chichester, N.H., his sentiment is not at its lowest point with those surrounding him, as this occurs in 1846 -- something that is logical as he deals with the financial scandal of President Nott. Tableau is software that allows us to see the average word usages throughout the text. In order to create the graph pictured, a list of trust words was retrieved through NRC Word-Emotion Association Lexicon, which scores words based on the sentiment they are used to describe. I then went through the text to find all the occasions that words categorized as 'trust'. From this, Lexos was used to create a file that could be uploaded to Tableau. While this is a very useful tool, it is worth noting that it fails to take into account if a word such as 'not' is in front of a sentiment word. Therefore, if Pearson wrote 'I do not believe,' it would still be understood that he was writing about an occasion he felt trustworthy on.
