Pearson's Use of Men v. Women

Resource added

Full description

Throughout the text, Pearson shows little to no praise towards women. This could be explained as a result of his gender bias and social norms as the Cult of Domesticity, which was used in order to confine women to roles within the home, was prevalent during the early 19th century. Many women still had not entered the workforce, although some, as Pearson described earlier, had begun working in industrial jobs. Yet, many would leave these once they found a suitable husband.

Voyant is a tool that is able to analyze texts, showing us the words most frequently used. The asterisk at the end of men, women, woman, and man allows us to see the frequency of any word that includes us, even if another letter occurs after the prefix. As Voyant shows us, Pearson mentions 'men' much more than 'women' throughout the entire length of his diaries. As he exists in a male-dominated world, this is to be expected.
